Mixed
media mural installed at Google Mapping Group near Seattle
This mural was partly inspired by the satellite
imagery that the Google teams depend upon for their
mapmaking and route finding services and software. It's an abstraction
that resembles an earthscape,
or even a paleontological dig.
As I worked on each stage of this mural, I had different ideas of
what it reminded me of, and what it
could become. I liked the simple arrangement of small branches glued
to the wall in the first phase,
but it didn't have a completed look to it. In the next phase, when
I covered the branches with paper
and sealed it with white acrylic paint - it brought to mind a wall
of fossils being exposed by the
elements. At that stage, I considered making it monochromatic to
convey the idea of fossils, but before
I began the mural, I selected a pallete of colors that included
several greens, blues, yellow ochre, red,
white, and black. I felt that for visual interest - and to follow
through on my initial concept - I needed
to incorporate the full spectrum of colors I had originally chosen
for the project. Through repeated
experimentation with color blending, highlighting, and detailing,
and with a series of color changes
along the way, the mural evolved from white, to medium blues and
greens, to a final transition of
greens, beiges, reds, and ochres, to greens and blues - with color
highlights that I added to help tie
the color scheme together.
